Koinonia is a Greek word meaning fellowship and community. You certainly get a feeling of community when you walk into the restaurant and coffee shop, nestled in Headland’s downtown square. Walking into the “kaffe” we experienced an immediate sense of feeling welcome in the tastefully decorated and appealing atmosphere.

The menu includes a good range of homemade items such as quiche, soup and desserts, while also offering the standard coffee shop fare such as paninis, wraps and salads.

My wife, Liz, ordered a cup of tomato and bacon soup which came with a rich, warming taste, a great combination of flavors. She also enjoyed a hefty sized fiesta salad for only $5.99. The salad was really fresh and included a variety of veggies that you don’t often find in other lettuce salads found everywhere else in town.

I ordered a chicken salad croissant sandwich, also for $5.99. The chicken salad was obviously homemade, plentiful and delicious to boot. My wife (not a born chicken salad fan) even enjoyed the sneaky bites she took from my plate.

When the desserts are homemade it is only polite to indulge, so we ordered a cinnamon roll and ice cream for dessert. We ate a very generous serving of mocha chocolate almond, not homemade, but the coffee and nut combination was tough to resist. We took in a few games of dominoes from the stash of board games in the “Kaffe” while we enjoyed dessert and coffee.

The cinnamon roll topped most you might find at regular chain restaurants, especially after it was heated up. My wife had a spiced chai tea to drink, which was creamy and yummy by all accounts. I enjoyed my usual coffee, a hazelnut cappuccino.

The restaurant coffee shop also included a conference room for private parties and meetings, along with a wireless Internet connection.

Paintings by Wiregrass artists for sale covered the walls, and a small section offered some greeting cards, handmade jewelry and other gift items for sale near the cash register. The “Kaffe” also includes several tables for eating along with some comfy sofas and a flat screen television.

Our only complaint regarding our visit to Koinonia in Headland is that there’s not one in Dothan. It would make a perfect addition to any up and coming downtown, and Headland should feel blessed to have this resource available to the community. It’s certainly worth the drive from Dothan, and with late hours on Friday it’s the perfect way to end a busy week.
